EXCEPTIONAL URBAN HOMES
The greatest glory of a building is not in its stones, nor in its gold. Its glory is in its Age, and in that deep sense of voicefulness, of stern watching, of mysterious sympathy...which we feel in walls that have long been washed by the passing waves of humanity.
~John Ruskin, Preservationist
We like to dream. Dreams propel us forward with childlike enthusiasm, full of hope and optimism. We dream of a Reno with no blight, of beautiful places to live, of a vibrant, productive city. We seek the properties that need another chance. Need another perspective, need…well, us. So it was with the entire city block bordered by Mill Street, Holcomb Avenue, High Street and Willow. A blighted, boarded up collection of buildings and homes, weeds and graffiti.
Our vision for the block was to adaptively repurpose the two large buildings into residences, but prior to turning a shovel we were contacted by individuals, dreaming dreams like us, who wanted to turn one building into a brewery and distillery and the other into offices with a mixed use component.
Hence, Whipple Brewery and Distillery now occupies 490 Mill and 400 Mill is in the process of becoming cool, Mad Men office space with a fitness club and Origins Salon on the ground floor.
Meanwhile, we cleaned up the five Craftsman bungalows, keeping them all true to their heritage. They are now back in business as bright, shiny residences.
In the fall of 2017 our last piece of the Urbanito puzzle will be in place: a project we have named "wee6". This will simply be the most amazing wee homes we have ever introduced to the Reno urban scene. Steel, glass, concrete, modernist dream structures.
Our greatest satisfaction in adaptively repurposing functionally obsolete buildings is when the project ends, when the building opens as a new business, when the homes are lived in by new residents, and we get to see these structures take on their next lives.
Talk about a dream come true.
